Ventura, CA-Kicking off a full weekend on the road, the Southern California Catch split their doubleheader with the Ventura Halos, both teams losing by four runs. Despite giving one up to the Halos, the Catch now stand with a 3-2 conference record and are neck and neck with the division leading Academy Barons.

Starting pitcher Jake Lochner (Missouri State University) gave the bullpen a break, pitching 6.1 innings with six hits, three runs and six strikeouts in the first game of the set. Meanwhile, the Catch’s offense caught fire early in the game, scoring back-to-back three-run innings in the first and second. A fatal error made in the outfield gave the Catch two runs to start off the top of the first. The next batter, Jaiden France (Undecided) put Southern California up 3-0 with an RBI groundout.

After Lochner struck out two in the bottom of the first, the Catch continued to add runs to the board with four consecutive hits. After Ethan Lopez (University of Hawaii-Manoa) hit an RBI single, Josh Rojas (University of Hawaii-Manoa) cleared the bases with an RBI double. Although he was tagged out trying to reach third, the Catch finished the first two innings up 6-0.

Despite his strong start, an error made by Lochner in the bottom of the third brought home the Halos’ first run of the game. Later in the inning, the Catch fell victim to an RBI groundout, which shrunk their lead down to 6-2. Although another RBI groundout brought the Halos within three runs of the Catch, Rojas drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single. He finished the game 2-4 with one run and two RBIs as Southern California took the first game from the Halos 7-3.

The second game began with the same tone as the first as the Catch quickly scored three runs in the top of the second. Another error brought in the first run of the game and was followed up by RBI singles hit by Austin Bull (Grand Canyon University) and Rojas. Through the first six innings, it seemed with starting pitcher Shawn Dumser (La Mirada High School) on the mound, the Catch would roll right through and take the twin bill.

However, the Halos leaped on Dumser and Nicolas Swizek (California State-Dominguez Hills) and managed to take a 7-3 lead over the Catch. Even though Caleb Potter (West Virginia University) led off the ninth inning with a triple, the Catch were unable to ignite a comeback and fell to the Halos 3-7.

Playing in the second game of the doubleheader, Christian Deaton (California State University-Bakersfield) was unstoppable at the plate, going 3-3 with one run and one walk.

A day after their doubleheader against the Halos, the Catch play another two-game set against the Orange County Riptide, starting on Sunday, June 12 at 1 p.m.
