BOX SCORE

La Mirada, CA-On their largest hot streak of the summer, the Catch have won three in a row after battling back to beat the South Bay Sliders 10-3. Their nonleague victory over the Sliders gave the Catch a 10-4 record, one of the highest in the California Collegiate League.

Starting pitcher Zach Clinton (Liberty University) bounced back after giving up two runs in the top of the first and went on to pitch six innings of four hit, two run and five strikeout baseball. The Catch continued their trend of consistent offense, scoring four runs through the first three innings from three sacrifice flies and an RBI groundout.

It was not until the fifth and sixth when the Catch unleashed their offense, scoring three runs in consecutive innings. Josh Rojas (University of Hawaii-Manoa) rewarded Austin Bull’s (Grand Canyon University) leadoff single in the fifth and drove him in with an RBI triple. Rojas scored two batters later when Zach Malis (Grand Canyon University) reached first on an error. Eventually Malis would score the final run of the inning, he was brought in by a sacrifice fly from Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist University), and the Catch ended the fifth with a 7-2 lead.

Southern California continued to cushion their lead with another three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Barrick (Liberty University) hit a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning and later Malis drove in a run with an RBI groundout. Sam Mrstik (Dallas Baptist University) doubled in a run and capped the Catch’s offensive production against the Sliders.

Before they lost, the Sliders managed to bring home a third run in the top of the seventh, but their deficit was too great as the Catch beat South Bay 10-7.

In their first game of the summer with the Catch, Sandmann and Mrstik both were major contributors in Southern California’s pivotal innings. Mrstik drove in two runs and ended his first game 1-3 with an RBI double, while Sandmann finished 2-4 with one run and one RBI. Bull is now batting .304 after his successful night, going 2-4 with three runs and one RBI.

The Catch wrap up their interleague break with a game against the Garden Grove 22’s on Wednesday, June 15 at 4:30 p.m.
