La Mirada, Ca-Once again, the Southern California Catch was outslugged by the Academy Barons. Thus far in the summer, the Catch have not lost two games in a row, but after losing their last two to the Barons, the Catch fall to a 5-4 conference record and are now even with the Barons for first in the South Division of the California Collegiate League.

Hitting his third home run in the last two games, Ethan Lopez (University of Hawaii-Manoa) sent the second pitch of the game past the right field fence, giving the Catch a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Lopez ended his night 2-4 with one run and one RBI.

Jimmy Gallarda (Biola University) drove in a run from an RBI groundout in the bottom of the second, but a bases loaded walk and a home run would tie the game at two after the top of the fifth. From there, things began to unravel quickly for the Catch.

Although starting pitcher Jake Lochner (Missouri State University) did not give up a hit through the four innings he pitched, he ended his outing with one run, six strike outs and seven walks, which was responsible for the Barons’ first run in the top of the fourth. Leading the game 3-2, the Barons locked in seven hits against Southern California in the top of the eighth and shot ahead 10-2. That one inning gave the Barons enough runs to best the Catch. Despite giving up only one hit and one run, Brandon Gilson (Texas Christian University) was charged with the loss as his base runner scored the go ahead run.

With hopes of regaining the momentum they once had, the Catch head north to face off against the Conejo Oaks on Saturday, June 18 at 4:30 p.m.
