La Mirada, CA-Despite holding a five-run lead going into the eighth, the Southern California Catch fell victim to a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth and lost to the Conejo Oaks 6-7. While the Oaks maintained their best winning percentage in the California Colligate League, the Catch suffered their fourth lose in a row and are falling quickly in the South Division standings.

Through starting pitcher Jimmy Gallarda’s (Biola University) six inning outing, the Catch seemed set to snap their losing streak. After giving up a lead off home run in the first inning, Gallarda settled in and held the Oaks to one run and five hits through the rest of his outing.

Josh Rojas (University of Hawaii-Manao) answered the Oaks’ home run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, which tied the game at one. In the third inning, Ethan Lopez (University of Hawaii-Manao) scored his second run of the game as Rojas once again delivered a two-out RBI single to bring the Catch up 2-1 over the Oaks.

Zack Davis (University of Alabama-Birmingham) and Lopez scored off of wild pitches in the bottom of the fourth and fifth and the Rojas extended the lead with his third RBI in the fifth. A half inning after the Oaks scored their second run of the game with a sacrifice fly, Lopez brought home Nate Pecota (William Jewell College) and kept the Catch four runs over the Oaks.

Both Lopez and Rojas ended the game with multiple hits and a number of runs and RBIs. Lopez went 3-4 with three runs and one RBI, while his University of Hawaii teammate went 3-3 with two walks, and three RBIs.

However, home runs in the top of eighth and ninth, given up by Daniel Jang (Biola University) and Nick Wernke (West Virginia University), proved to be the deciding factor in the Oaks win. Despite putting runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth, the Catch were unable to bring a run home and lost 7-6.

After the Catch’s three-day mission trip down in Mexico, the team returns to face off against the Academy Barons on Friday, June 24 at 4:30 p.m.
