La Mirada, CA-After losing to the Orange County Riptide two days earlier, the Southern California Catch built a lead they held onto against the Tide to work their way back up to an even conference record. Now 8-8, the Catch move within four games of the South Division leading Academy Barons.

Starting pitcher Jimmy Gallarda (Biola University) picked up where he left off his seven inning shut out against the San Francisco Seals to blank the Tide through his 6.2 innings. With his three-hit and one walk outing, Gallarda currently holds a 13.2 inning scoreless streak en route to the Catch’s third shutout of the season.

After a quiet first two innings, Southern California hit the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the third. In his first at bat in a Catch uniform, catcher Rawley Hughes (Biola University) drew a leadoff walk and later scored Southern California’s first run of the game, thanks to an RBI double from shortstop Austin Bull (Grand Canyon University).

Two batters later, Bull was driven in with a single from his Grand Canyon University teammate, first baseman Zach Malis (Grand Canyon University). Smart base running from Josh Rojas (University of Hawaii-Manoa), who scored on a passed ball, gave the Catch a 3-0 by the end of the inning.

Ethan Lopez (University of Hawaii-Manoa) added another run for the Catch in the bottom of the fifth. With Bull on base from a lead off single, Lopez grounded out into a double play, which was enough for Bull to score his second run of the game.

The Catch took their four-run lead from the seventh through the remainder of the game, where Brandon Gilson (Texas Christian University), Caleb MacPherson (Bethel College), and Daniel Jang (Biola University) finished the game without giving up a run. Only two games back from his heel injury, Bull ended the game 3-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

After the day off on the Fourth of July, the Catch pick up their summer schedule with a doubleheader against the Ventura Halos, starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5.
