Catch Beat Blues in Extras

By Keaton A. Moore - Sports Information

San Luis Obispo, CA-Taking their lead into the bottom of the ninth, the Southern California Catch bested the San Luis Obispo Blues in their first extra inning game of the summer. Although their matchup did not count towards their conference record, the Catch start their three-game road trip against the Blues with a 4-3 extra inning victory.

First baseman Jaiden France (Undecided) wasted no time in giving the Catch a one-run lead in the top of the first with an RBI single. Before the end of the first, right fielder Sam Mrsik (Dallas Baptist University) scored during a pickle between first and second to give the Catch a 2-0 lead over the Blues.

Southern California held onto their lead through starting pitcher Daniel Alvarez’s (Mt. San Antonio College) seven solid innings. Alvarez held the Blues to one run, five hits and struck out eight in one of his best starts of the summer.

An RBI groundout in the top of the first, hit by centerfielder Nate Pecota (William Jewell University), gave the Catch enough insurance runs to outlast the Blues’ ninth inning rally. With two errors and an RBI single, the Blues scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and tied the Catch 3-3.

However, their lead was short-lived as Mrstik delivered for the second time of the night and drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the tenth inning. Leading the Blues 4-3, right-handed pitcher James Goodwin Jr. (Biola University) shut the door in the bottom of the tenth, giving up one walk and striking out the side.

The next game of the series marks the start of the interleague play between the Catch and the Blues. The second game is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 at 6 p.m.
