La Mirada, Ca-With a nine-run third inning, the Southern California Catch put away the Orange County Riptide to start their three-game series. Scoring 13 runs through the first three innings of the game, the Catch improved to an even 14-14 conference record and beat the Tide 14-8.

Although Caleb Potter (West Virginia University) and  Nate Pecota (William Jewell University) hit two home runs to put the Catch up 4-1, the Tide struck back and tied the game with three runs in the top of the third. However, an inning that started out with a leadoff walk, proved to be the fatal blow for Orange County in the series opener.

With Johnny Weeks (University of Hawaii-Manoa) on base, Zach Malis (Grand Canyon University) drove in the go ahead run in the bottom of the third. From there, the Catch added all the insurance runs they would need.

The next five batters all brought runs home from either bases loaded walks or hits and after a full cycle of the lineup the Riptide put away their first batter. Josh Barrick (Liberty University) followed in Malis’ footsteps and hit a single which brought home the Catch’s second run of the inning. Bases loaded walks from Jimmy Gallarda (Biola University), Pecota and Austin Bull (Grand Canyon University) and an RBI single from the bat of Jacob Hathaway (Undecided) all brought home runs before Weeks struck out for the first out of the inning.

The Catch ended the third inning with a tremendous 13-4 lead over the Tide which lasted them through the remaining six innings of the game.

Now only one game back from the Wild Card spot, the Catch continue their series against the Riptide at Concordia University on Wednesday, July 20 at 4:30 p.m.
