La Mirada, CA- Kicking off their four-game series against the Academy Barons, the Southern California Catch halted the Barons, who are now 7-3 in their last 10 games, in their tracks. Although the Barons outscore the Catch 43-21 through their first four meetings, Southern California bested the Academy and are now 2-3 against them this summer. Their fourteen-run victory marks the second time the Catch held the Academy to single-digit runs and is their seventh double-digit win of the summer.

Compared to the third inning, the Catch quietly scored three runs in the first two innings against the Barons. After a quick two outs in the bottom of the first, Southern California hit three consecutive hits and first baseman Zach Malis (Grand Canyon University) drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Once right fielder Sam Mrstik (Dallas Baptist University) stole his way to third, he was brought home by the quick feet of center fielder Nate Pecota (William Jewell University), who ran out a bunt for an RBI single. With another successful bunt, hit by second baseman Josh Rojas (University of Hawaii-Manoa), the Catch finished their side of the second inning up 3-0. Going into the third, the Barons took advantage of a two-out infield error and brought the game within two runs.

However, the Catch offense made up for the run with nine of their own in the top of the third. The contagious hitting in the inning began with an RBI double from Mrstik, which put Malis at third base, allowing him to score on a passed ball before the second out of the inning. With two runs already in, short stop Austin Bull (Grand Canyon University) and Pecota hit back-to-back RBI doubles and brought up Rojas, who hit an RBI single and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Once the Catch batted through the lineup and then some, Mrstik capped Southern California’s run-heavy inning with a two run, RBI double. In the third inning alone, Mrstik was 2-2 with one run and three RBIs.

With a massive 12-1 lead, starting pitcher Daniel Alvarez (Mt. San Antonio College) pitched comfortably through his four inning outing. Deuces were wild for Alvarez, who ended his start allowing two runs off of two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Everyone had a piece of the action as the Catch scored four more runs in the later innings of the game. By the end of the third inning, each batter in the Catch’s starting lineup scored at least once and a majority ended with an RBI to their name. Walking three times in the game, Malis reached base in each of his five at bats and finished 3-3 with one RBI and two runs.

Making up for a cancelled game after the trip to Mexico, the Catch continue on with their four-game series against the Barons with a doubleheader, starting on Saturday, July 23 at 1 p.m.
