Catch Out Duel Surf

Garrett Osterode -- SID

Irvine, Calif. – After scoring 14 runs a night ago, the Catch offense seemed to have disappeared on Sunday night. Luckily, the So Cal pitchers brought their A-game and were able to shut down the So Cal Surf and take this one by the final score of 2-1.

Sunday was all about the Catch pitching, and that started with left-hander Tayt Smith (Azusa Pacific). Tayt received his first starting nod and took full advantage of it, hurling four solid innings and allowing only one Surf run. Smith has now only allowed one run in his eight and two thirds innings he has thrown for far this year.

The bullpen was outstanding for the Catch tonight, following up Smith with five shutout innings was the likes of Conner Davis (Creighton), Joseph Hanley (North Central), Chad Boudreaux (East Texas Baptist), Bailey Martin (Miami), and Steven Garrett (Azusa Pacific). This Catch bullpen allowed only one hit and struck out four Surf hitters. Bailey Martin picked up the win while Steven Garrett was able to lock down the save in the ninth.

The Catch offense wasn’t great tonight, but they were able to manufacture a couple of runs when they were needed. The first of which coming from a sacrifice fly from Nate Pecota (William Jewell) after the bases were loaded from a hit batter and two straight walks. The go-ahead run was driven in by Mitchell Bumann (Hawaii Pacific) scoring Pecota from third base after he reached via base on balls and stole two bases.

The Catch get an off day tomorrow, and with FCA baseball camp starting Monday morning the team will get a chance to give back and hang out with the local kids and teach them a thing or two.

Looking Ahead:

The Catch welcome the Santa Barbara Foresters to Eagles Diamond on Tuesday for the second time this season. Jordan Hand (Dallas Baptist), Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist), and Matthew Wade (Southeastern Missouri) will all be making their Catch debuts later this week and will provide much needed depth to the lineup and pitching staff.

Game Notes:

-Jonathon Ducoff (Houston Baptist) continued his streak of hot hitting, batting an outstanding 11/23, .478 Batting Average, over the past 5 games.

-Tayt Smith, with his first run allowed today, now has a 1.04 ERA on the season. That is good for first on the team with pitchers that have recorded more than five innings.

 - After starting the game at first base, Steven Garrett came into pitch for the second time this season and even picked up the save. Garrett is proving himself to be a legitimate weapon out of the Catch ‘pen for Coach Peters.
