La Mirada, CA-Joining his old Southern California Catch teammate, Brandon Van Horn, left-handed pitcher Eric Diomartich signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, June 12. Diomartich was a part of the inaugural Catch team in 2013 and after a year playing at Saddleback College, he eventually worked his way up and became ace of the Biola University starting rotation in 2016.

Diomartich was born in Laguna, California and spent the last two years of his high school career pitching and playing outfield on the Laguna High School varsity team. Once he graduated in 2012, Diomartich spent his freshman year playing for Saddleback College where the Gauchos finished 28-13 and third in the Orange Empire conference.

It was the summer after his freshman year when Diomartich joined the Southern California Catch. Through the 12 games and 33 innings he pitched, Diomartich ended the season 1-2 with a 6.48 ERA and 35 strikeouts.

For the next three years, Diomartich found his home in La Mirada, California, on the Biola University Eagle’s baseball team. He improved from his sophomore year, in which he finished 1-6 with a 6.00 ERA, and helped lead his team to a late season surge to their first playoff appearance since 2011.

During his senior year, Diomartich went 5-5, held a 4.03 ERA and threw 80 strikeouts. His stellar starts leaked into the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament, but the Eagles’ efforts were not enough as they lost the championship to The Master’s College Mustangs.
