Barons Bounce Back Against Catch (5-2)

Box Score

A game that was a pitching duel through six innings turned into a sour return home for the So Cal Catch (5-2), as the Academy Barons (2-4) scored six runs in the last three innings to win 7-0. Leadoff hitter and shortstop Justin Broussard (Orange Coast JC) delivered the final blow in the ninth inning by hitting a two-run homerun off Billy Kirkpatrick (William Jewell). It was Broussard’s first round tripper of the season.

Jason Kim (Biola Univ.) was the tough luck loser, surrendering one unearned run in his five innings on the slab. Kim only allowed two hits on the evening, both singles, but he was victimized by two Catch errors in the first inning that resulted in the run that would keep for the Barons until the seventh. A routine groundball went through the legs of third baseman Perry Rigby (Covenant College) to allow the second batter of the game, Juan Avena (Sterling College), to reach base. A pickoff attempt by Kim cost him and the Catch because the errant throw allowed Avena to reach third with one out. The next hitter, DJ Wallace (Southern Univ.), then grounded out to plate the first run.

The entire Baron pitching staff kept the Catch at bay throughout the entire game and starter Pedro Fierros (Compton JC) led the effort with five shutout innings to earn the victory. The best chance the Catch had came in the fourth when Jordan Aboites (Arizona State Univ.) led off the inning with a double over the center fielder’s head. Jordan Crowell grounded to the right side to advance Aboites to thind, but Fierros buckled down and got out of the jam by striking out Perry Rigby and Sean Nearhoof (Univ. Hawaii, Hilo). In no other inning did a Catch runner reach second base.

The Catch is now 1-1 in California Collegiate League play while the Barons improve to 2-4. They still hold onto first place in the South Division one week into league play. The Barons are one game back of first while tomorrow’s opponent, the Santa Paul Halos, are a half-game back after winning in Santa Barbara against the Foresters today. Tomorrow’s game against the Halo’s will begin at 5 pm. If you cannot come out to the ballpark, please follow the link to watch live home games at socalcatch.com
